“Manasota Key Underwater Archaeological Site” with John McCarthy
John McCarthy, the Executive Director of Gulf Coast Heritage Association and Historic Spanish Point, will present an update on the most recent archaeological discovery in the area. It is a unique archaeological site located near Manasota Key in the Gulf of Mexico. Underwater archaeologists from Florida's Bureau of Archaeological Research have been working to study and protect the site. The fact that it is underwater complicates the treatment of this site immeasurably.
Mr. McCarthy is a native Floridian and has lived in Sarasota for most of his life. He has served as the Sarasota County historian and director of parks and recreation. He has also served two terms as President of the Sarasota Historical Society. This is McCarthy's second class, he provided a popular LLI program and tour of Spanish Point last January.
