Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium Sarasota, FL Wednesday, November 7, 2018 “RED TIDE & WATER POLLUTION – SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS” With so much of Florida’s lifestyles and business operations dependent on the quality of its waters, a trip to the Mote facility will provide some understanding of how and why and what we can – and cannot -- do. Learn about the research and projects being conducted by the marine scientists and staff at Mote in conjunction with other agencies and programs, plus observe many fascinating exhibits of water environments and species of fish and water mammals.
The chartered bus will leave the Charlotte campus (near the auditorium) at 9:00 a.m. and arrive at Mote’s Mammal Center by 10:30 for a guided tour.
Then on to the air-conditioned classroom for “Lunch & Learn,” followed by a “Meet the Scientist” presentation on red tide research and more! Did you know that the Mote Laboratory began in Placida?!
Our visit will end with time for you to view all the aquarium exhibits at your own pace and to ask questions of the volunteers stationed at most of the exhibits. The bus will leave the Mote facility by 4:00 p.m. for a “home landing” at approximately 5:00.
Be sure to dress comfortably and bring water containers with you – there are fountains to refill with cool water. Walking is on paved sidewalks and is minimal, mostly around the aquarium exhibits, and wheelchairs are available on a first-come basis. Lunch will be provided by an outside caterer.
This trip will go “rain or shine” as most areas are covered and can be viewed both inside and out. Refunds will be considered if requested prior by end of day on October 31; request must be in writing and must specify the reason for cancellation. Trip is limited to 45 people.
Come with us to “ooh and aah” over the colorful and enchanting varieties of fishes in our waters and to learn about their many habitats – what keeps them healthy and what doesn’t!

ST. ARMAND’S CIRCLE TOUR & PROGRESSIVE LUNCH “STROLL, LEARN & TASTE!” TUESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2018
This LLI trip is a great opportunity to not only learn the history of St. Armand’s Circle, one of the loveliest areas in Sarasota (and an island), but also to enjoy some holiday decorations and get into the holiday spirit. Maybe make it a gift to yourself and/or someone special in your life!
Stroll & Learn: A docent-led walking tour of St. Armand’s Circle in Sarasota will feature how integral John Ringling and the Ringling Brothers Circus was in establishing this popular area. The Circle is ringed with medallions of personalities making this venue a virtual Circus Hall of Fame. In addition, there are other famous statues within the Circle tour that the docents will discuss.
And Taste: The trip includes four different restaurants for a progressive lunch – appetizers/salad, entrees/accompaniments at two different places, and dessert. Each restaurant has handicapped access. Tour guidelines request that you “come hungry” as there will be lots to eat and you will be full at the end of the tasting part of the tour!
LLI has scheduled three tours of approximately three hours each and we will be divided into three different groups with different starting times – 11:00 a.m., 12:00 noon, and 1:00 p.m. Each group will have time to explore on your own, either before or after the tour. There is about a mile of walking on sidewalks so wear comfortable shoes and casual attire. There are benches along the way plus seating in the restaurants for the tasting part of the tour.
Cold bottled water will be provided on the return trip to the campus but there will not be any snacks – we think you won’t even miss them!
Members: $104.00 Non-members: $119.00 Patron: $94.00. Fees include the docent tour, the progressive lunch, coach transportation and all tips. Meet in FSW, Building O Cafeteria from 9:00-9:25 am The bus leaves FSW Charlotte Campus promptly at 9:30 a.m. and returns by 6:00 p.m.
